Choose by what you need to be told about and by where the device has to sit. Compare the detection method, the mounting location, the power source, how loud the alarm is and where it sounds, whether there is a phone alert, and the battery or wiring the unit needs. Certification is worth checking as well: alarms on pool access doors are often specified to UL 2017, and some in-water alarms are tested to ASTM F2208. None of these devices is a substitute for a fence, a barrier, a safety cover, or adult supervision. They are an additional layer of protection, and constant adult supervision of children in and around water is still required. Requirements vary by state, county and municipality, so verify what your pool needs with your local building department before you buy.
