Cantilever shade structures

A cantilever shade puts its support post outside the shaded area, so the space underneath stays clear of legs and poles. That is the whole reason to choose one over a centre-pole umbrella: the shade lands where you sit, not where the hardware is. These are permanent installations, mounted either direct to concrete or on moveable ballast bases, and the modular systems expand in sections as your coverage needs grow.

What is a cantilever shade?

A cantilever shade is an outdoor shade structure supported by an offset post at one side rather than a pole through the middle. The canopy extends out over the seating area from that single post, leaving the shaded space completely open. It is the standard solution for shading a dining table, a lounge set, or a stretch of pool deck where a centre pole would be in the way.

How is a cantilever shade mounted?

Cantilever shades mount one of two ways: anchored direct to a concrete slab, or set on weighted ballast bases that require no drilling. Direct-to-concrete is permanent and takes up no extra floor area. Ballast bases sit on the surface and are held down by pavers, which makes them the option for finished patios, rented properties, and anywhere the shade may need to move later.

Can a cantilever shade be extended?

Modular cantilever systems can be extended in sections using extension kits, each of which adds a fixed length to the canopy run. This lets you start with a single unit and add coverage in a later season rather than replacing the whole structure. Check the maximum total run for the specific system before planning a long layout.

Cantilever shade vs. patio umbrella

A cantilever shade covers more area, blocks more UV, and stays up through the season; a patio umbrella costs less, goes up in minutes, and stores away. The trade-off is commitment: a shade structure needs anchoring or ballast and is a project to install, while an umbrella is furniture.
