Which alarm unit does your system need?
This one, in most homes. WiFi rarely reaches the far end of a yard well enough for a camera, and the built-in repeater is what closes that gap. The simple alarm sounds the same siren but does not extend the network.

Where should the repeater be placed?
Between your router and the camera, not next to either. A repeater has to receive a usable signal before it can extend one, so a position roughly halfway, on an outside-facing wall, generally beats one in the far corner of the house.

Does this work on its own?
No. It is the alarm and repeater unit for a SwamCam camera system. Without a system there is nothing for it to sound an alarm about or extend a connection to.
What is the difference between this and the simple alarm?
This unit has a built-in WiFi repeater and the simple alarm does not. Both sound the same 91 dBA indoor siren. Most pool areas need the repeater because household WiFi does not reach that far.
Will the sirens still work if my internet drops?
Yes. The system uses Zigbee alongside WiFi, so the camera siren and the indoor alarm still trigger. The phone notification is what stops, because that alert travels over your network.
Where should I plug it in?
Somewhere between your router and the camera rather than beside either one. A repeater needs a usable signal to extend, so roughly halfway on an outside-facing wall usually works best.
Can I use two of these?
One system takes any combination of up to eighteen accessories, so additional indoor alarms are possible. Whether a second repeater helps depends on your layout, so ask us before ordering one for that purpose.
Is this a replacement part or an upgrade?
Both, depending on why you are buying. It replaces a failed alarm unit, and it also upgrades a system originally bought with the simple alarm if your WiFi turns out not to reach the pool.
Does it improve WiFi for the rest of the house?
It is intended to extend coverage toward the camera rather than to serve as a general home mesh node. Treat any improvement elsewhere as a side effect rather than the reason to buy it.
How loud is 91 dBA in practice?
That figure is measured at ten feet. It is loud enough to carry through an open-plan space, but closed doors, distance and background noise all reduce it, so place it with the occupied rooms in mind.
