Indoors means commercial, not your living room
Sunstar's manual puts the series in outdoor application and indoor non-residential spaces. An enclosed commercial room also needs at least 4 CFM of exhaust air for every 1,000 BTU per hour of operating input, which on an SGL50 is a real ventilation figure rather than a footnote. If you are looking at a garage, a sunroom or an enclosed porch, ask us first.
The remote is not a one way door
The difference between an N7 and an N10 is the wireless remote. Both have the hardwired three position switch. If you order the switch only version and find yourself reaching for a ladder every evening, the remote kit is part 44640010 and it retrofits, so this is not a decision worth agonising over.
Marine grade is about the air, not the postcode
316 stainless is specified for chloride exposure, which is what salt air and pool chemistry both are. Within sight of the water, over a pool, or anywhere hosed down regularly, take it. Ten miles inland under a covered patio, the black finish is hi-temp aluminized steel and it will outlast the fashion.
Four Things That Decide The Install.
None of these cost much to get right at the planning stage. All of them cost real money once the ceiling is closed.
Measure the ceiling before you choose the heater
This is the decision everything else follows from. Sunstar publishes a mounting height for each angle band, and the two heaters do not overlap as much as people expect. Under a 9 ft ceiling the SGL35 gives you the whole angle range and the SGL50 does not.

Get the gas pressure right, not just the pipe
The heater needs a supply pressure at the appliance, not at the meter. Have the line sized for everything on the run rather than for this heater alone, because a line sized for one leaves two of them weak the first time they are lit together.

Put the outlet on the electrician's list
The ignition and the controls run on a small 120 volt supply. It is easy to forget because the heater is a gas appliance, and it is expensive to add once the ceiling is closed. The hardwired switch runs off the same supply.

Decide the heat shield with the ceiling, not after
A shield is what makes a tight ceiling or a combustible soffit workable, and horizontal mounting needs it more often than an angled one. It is in the box on the fixed mount packages and separate on the adjustable ones.

Can I put one of these inside?
Outdoors, yes, anywhere. Indoors it is commercial only. SunStar's installation manual states the series is for outdoor application and indoor non-residential spaces, and their own product page calls it outdoor rated. An indoor commercial room also has to be ventilated, at a minimum of 4 CFM of exhaust air for every 1,000 BTU per hour of operating input, which on a single SGL50 is a real number rather than a formality. If you are looking at a covered but enclosed space, tell us what it is and we will tell you honestly whether it qualifies.
Which size, the 35 or the 50?
Start with your ceiling, not with the square footage. The SGL35 mounts between 6.5 and 11 ft depending on the angle, the SGL50 between 8 and 12 ft. If your ceiling is 9 ft, the 35 gives you the whole angle range and the 50 does not. Where you have the height, the 50 covers a longer run and holds up better in an exposed spot. Both cover about twelve feet by twelve in minimal wind.
What is the difference between a 7 and a 10?
The remote. Both come with the hardwired three position switch for high, low and off. The N10 and L10 add a wireless remote on top of it. If you order a 7 and change your mind, the remote kit is part 44640010 and it goes on afterwards, so this is not a decision you are stuck with.
What does the package actually include?
The heater, a mounting kit, and on the fixed mount versions a heat shield as well. The adjustable kit takes the heater from 15 to 60 degrees on a wall or a ceiling. The fixed kit holds it horizontal and comes with the shield, because horizontal is the position that puts the heater closest to the ceiling. Neither includes the flexible gas connector, which is listed separately.
Can I buy just the heater?
Yes, and it is the right choice if the brackets are already up, if you are replacing a heater on an existing run, or if the mounting is being fabricated. The heater on its own is the SGL35 or SGL50 listing rather than a package. Choose "I already have a mount" in the configurator and it will take you straight to it.
Natural gas or propane, and can I convert later?
Choose before you order. The orifices are set at the factory and the two are not interchangeable without a conversion. Natural gas wants 7 to 14 inches of water column at the heater, propane 11.5 to 14. If you are not certain what runs to the spot, send us a photo of the meter or the tank and we will tell you which one to take.
Does it need electricity?
Yes, 120 volt, 60 hertz single phase at 0.4 amp. It is a small supply but the ignition and the controls will not work without it, so it belongs on the electrician's list at first fix rather than after the ceiling is closed. The hardwired switch runs on the same supply.
When is marine grade worth the money?
Within sight of salt water, directly over a pool, or anywhere that gets hosed down as part of the cleaning routine. That is what 316 stainless is for. Ten miles inland under a covered patio, the black finish is hi-temp aluminized steel and it will last just as long for a good deal less. We would rather tell you that than sell you the stainless.
Do I need the heat shield?
If the heater is going close to a ceiling or under anything combustible, almost certainly, and more so on a horizontal mount than an angled one. It comes in the box on the fixed mount packages. On the adjustable packages it is separate, and it is cut to the heater size: 44566300 for the SGL35, 566400 for the SGL50. Send us your ceiling height and what it is made of and we will check the published clearance with you.
Will it work in wind?
SunStar rates the series wind resistant up to 40 MPH, and the tinted glass front is part of how. The coverage figure of twelve feet by twelve is quoted for minimal wind, so expect a breezy evening to shrink the comfortable area rather than to put the heater out.
