Why the Ocean range can stay out all season

Ocean is built from reclaimed waste plastic on gunmetal recycled steel. There is no upholstery, no wood to oil and nothing to carry in when the forecast turns.

  • Slatted seats and backs let rain run straight through
  • Chairs and lounge chairs stack four high for winter storage
  • Frames are built to come apart at the end of their life and be recycled
  • Dining tables for two and for four, plus a bench and a lounge table

What Matek furniture is actually made of

Mater presses industrial waste into a solid composite instead of using veneer over board. Coffee shells, wood waste and post consumer electronics go in, and the surface you see is the material all the way through.

Mater sells these pieces for interiors and publishes no open weather rating for them, so Aqua Terra Backyard lists them as covered patio furniture. A roofed porch, a screened room or a pergola suits them. The Ocean range is the one to choose for open weather.

More about Mater outdoor and covered patio furniture

Mater is a Danish design brand that builds furniture out of waste rather than virgin material. The Ocean range, drawn by Jorgen and Nanna Ditzel in 1955 and reissued in reclaimed waste plastic, is the part of the range rated to stay outdoors: slatted recycled plastic seats and backs on gunmetal recycled steel frames, with dining chairs, lounge chairs, a bench, dining tables for two and four, and a lounge table. It needs no cushions and the chairs stack four high for winter storage.

The rest of the range is cast in Matek, Mater's own composite of coffee shells, wood waste and post consumer electronics. The Eternity chairs by Space Copenhagen, the Compound chairs by OEO Studio, the Alder tables by Patricia Urquiola, the Lily tables by OEO Studio, the Bowl Table by Ayush Kasliwal, the Earth stools by Eva Harlou and the Mater Cube all use it. Mater sells those pieces for interiors and publishes no open weather rating for them, so Aqua Terra Backyard lists them as covered patio furniture suitable for a roofed porch, a screened room or a pergola rather than for open weather.

Aqua Terra Backyard is an authorized Mater dealer. Every dimension, weight and finish shown on these pages comes from Mater's own published figures.
