Hearth Classics Ember Defender Hearth Pad, Type 1, Textured Black
Hearth Classics Ember Defender Hearth Pad, Type 1, Textured Black

The Hearth Classics Ember Defender is a Type 1 hearth pad: a 1/8 inch black steel board, reinforced with 10 gauge steel, that protects the floor from falling embers. It suits stoves whose manual calls for ember protection only. A slightly textured black powder coat covers both sides, so the pad is reversible. This listing covers the 40 and 48 inch Standard and Corner pads and the 12 by 48 inch Extension.

Questions people ask us
What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2?
Type 1 protects the floor from falling embers only. Type 2 protects against embers and heat, so the heat that comes down and forward from the stove does not pass through the pad into the floor. Hearth Classics tests its hearth pads to meet or exceed UL 1618, the safety standard for floor protectors, wall protectors and hearth extensions.
How do I know if Type 1 is enough?
Check the stove manufacturer's manual. It states whether the floor needs Type 1 or Type 2 protection and, for Type 2, the minimum R-value. Hearth Classics notes that wood, pellet, coal and corn stoves all need ember protection, and that stoves sending significant heat down and forward need Type 2. If your manual gives an R-value, look at the Type 2 hearth pads.
What is the 12" x 48" Extension?
It is the narrow Ember Defender shape, 12 inches deep by 48 inches wide, listed by Hearth Classics alongside the Standard and Corner pads. If you are not sure it covers the area your manual requires, send us the measurements first.
Why are there two small holes along the back?
Hearth Classics notes two holes of about 5 mm along the back edge. They come from manufacturing and are normal.
Standard or Corner?
A Standard pad sits in front of a stove placed along a flat wall. A Corner pad is the shape for a stove set in the corner of a room. Not sure? Send us a photo and we will help.
