If your heater is leaking from the return side, showing rust around the header, or losing integrity at the water outlet end of the exchanger, the return header is one of the first components to inspect. Header damage can create pressure loss, external leaks, and poor water flow through the heater.
This return header collects heated water as it leaves the exchanger and directs it back into the plumbing path on compatible 181 to 402 8-tube heaters. When the header cracks, corrodes, or no longer seals properly, the heater can leak and lose water-side stability. Replacing it restores the return-side water routing assembly.
