Oxford Garden Oland Bar Chair

The bar height member of Oxford Garden's Oland group. Quilted Sunbrella is wrapped over the seat and back of a powder coated aluminum frame, and a welded footrest runs around the legs at the height a bar chair needs one.

Frame. Marine grade aluminum, powder coated. Aluminum does not rust, so the frame does not depend on a coating staying perfect to survive, and it stays light enough that one person can move the piece without help. The powder coat is baked on rather than sprayed, which is why it holds at the joints where outdoor furniture usually fails first.

Upholstery. Quilted Sunbrella, wrapped over the seat and back rather than laid on as a loose pad. The seat is built on a quick dry foam core with a vented bottom so water that gets in has somewhere to go.

Feet. Leg end caps are fitted at the factory so the frame does not mark decking, tile or stone when it is slid rather than lifted.

The fabric and the powder coat finish are specified when the order is placed. Both are confirmed on your acknowledgment before the chair is built.

Oland's upholstery lives in Oxford Garden's Q. fabric namespace, which is separate from the cushion grades used elsewhere in the line. The three Grade A Sunbrellas below are offered on Oland and nowhere else, and they all sell at the same price, so the choice is purely a matter of what you want to look at.

All three are Grade A Sunbrella, a solution dyed acrylic in which the color goes into the fiber before it is spun rather than being printed onto finished cloth. That is why these fabrics hold their color in direct sun far longer than a conventional outdoor print.

Quilted upholstery. Brush off loose dirt, sponge with mild soap and lukewarm water, rinse thoroughly and let it air dry. Do not machine dry. The vented seat base drains on its own after rain.

Powder coated aluminum. Wash with mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners, which dull the finish. Touch up a deep scratch promptly so salt and grit have nothing to work at.

Off season. The powder coated aluminum frame can stay outside all year.

Bar height or counter height, which do I need?

Measure to the top of your counter. About 42 inches is bar height and takes this chair's 30.25 inch seat. About 36 inches is counter height and takes the Oland Counter Chair at 23.75 inches. The two chairs are otherwise the same design.

Which fabrics can I choose?

Canvas Granite code Q.5402, Canvas Rust code Q.54010 and Spectrum Indigo code Q.SI, all Grade A Sunbrella from Oxford Garden's Q. namespace. They are an Oland exclusive and all three cost the same, so pick on looks.

Will an upholstered chair survive being rained on?

The seat is built on a quick dry foam core with a vented bottom, so water that gets through the face fabric drains out rather than sitting in the cushion. After a shower it is damp rather than soaked, and it dries in the open air.

Why is the fabric quilted?

Quilting is stitched through the face fabric and the padding rather than the padding being loose inside a cover. It keeps the fill from shifting into a lump at the front edge of the seat, which is the usual failure of a thin outdoor pad after a couple of seasons.

How much space does a row of them need?

Each chair is 22.25 inches wide. Allow about 26 to 28 inches per stool along the bar so people can get on and off without knocking the next chair, which means three across a seven foot bar rather than four.

How does it ship?

By parcel carrier. The carton runs 30 by 23 by 25 inches at 21 pounds, which stays inside parcel limits even though the chair stands 46 inches tall assembled.

Can I leave it outside all year?

The frame can. Upholstery of any kind lasts longer under a cover or indoors through long wet spells, and Oland's vented seat construction helps but does not make covering it pointless.
