The Mende Side Chair pairs a Blonde Cane Weave back with a padded sling seat on a powder coated aluminum frame. The padding sits inside the sling rather than on top of the chair, which is what lets it be comfortable at a table and still dry in the open.

Materials and Construction
Frame. Marine grade aluminum, powder coated. Aluminum does not rust, so the frame does not depend on a coating staying perfect to survive, and it stays light enough that one person can move the piece without help. The powder coat is baked on rather than sprayed, which is why it holds at the joints where outdoor furniture usually fails first.
Weave. Blonde Cane Weave, Oxford Garden weave code W.BC and used on the Mende collection only. It is a synthetic cane that reads like traditional caning but is built for commercial duty outdoors, so it does not swell, split or mildew the way natural cane does when it is rained on.
Feet. Leg end caps are fitted at the factory so the frame does not mark decking, tile or stone when it is slid rather than lifted.

No loose cushion is supplied and none is needed. The sling seat is padded in its own construction.
Seat Fabric, COM and SOF
The 2026 price list gives the Mende Side Chair a single price line, labelled COM or SOF. COM is customer's own material. SOF is a special order fabric outside Oxford Garden's standard grade books. Either way, the seat fabric is specified at the time the order goes in rather than picked from a stocked selection.
The powder coat on the frame is specified the same way.

This piece ships by LTL freight, not by parcel carrier, at 8 lb.

Care and Maintenance
Sling. Hose it down and let it dry. Sling fabric drains and dries on its own and does not need to be brought inside. For stubborn marks, mild soap and a soft brush.
Blonde Cane Weave. Rinse and wipe with mild soap and water, using a soft brush along the weave rather than across it. It needs no oiling or sealing, which is the practical difference from natural cane.
Powder coated aluminum. Wash with mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners, which dull the finish. Touch up a deep scratch promptly so salt and grit have nothing to work at.
Off season. The powder coated aluminum frame can stay outside all year.

What is Blonde Cane Weave?
Blonde Cane Weave is Oxford Garden's synthetic cane, weave code W.BC, used on Mende and on nothing else in the line. It gives the look of traditional caning with commercial outdoor durability, so it does not swell, split or mildew the way natural cane does once it has been rained on.
Is a padded sling as comfortable as a cushion?
For dining, most people find it better. The padding is inside the sling, so the seat has give but it drains and dries like a sling does, and there is nothing to lift off the chair when the forecast turns.
Will it fit under my dining table?
The chair is 18.5 inches wide and only 17.75 inches deep, with a 17.5 inch seat, so it tucks in tight and suits a crowded table or a narrow deck better than most dining chairs do.
Can it stay outside all year?
Yes. The aluminum does not rust, the synthetic cane does not absorb water and the sling drains, so there is nothing in the chair for a freeze to damage. Rinse grit out of the cane occasionally.
How is it delivered?
By LTL freight to the curb with lift gate service. Even a single chair ships in a 32 by 25 by 25 inch carton, which is past what parcel carriers accept, so the carrier contacts you to arrange a window.
