The larger English Planter, 19 inches square and 17 inches high in solid teak. The wider footprint takes a plant with some presence to it, which is why this is the one that usually ends up in pairs at a gateway or along a terrace edge.
- Solid teak, joined not screwed. Mortise and tenon joints pinned with solid wood dowels, the same construction Oxford Garden uses on its benches. There is no hardware in it to rust and stain the wood.
- Slatted bottom. Water drains straight through rather than collecting under the root ball, which is the usual way a wooden planter rots from the inside.
- Plant it or drop a pot in it. You can cultivate directly in the box or stand a pre-potted plant inside it and lift the whole thing out at the end of the season.
- Wider than it is tall. Nineteen inches square against seventeen high, which is a steadier stance than a cube once there is a tall plant in it.

Oxford Garden's English Planter is a square teak box on turned uprights, built the way their benches are: mortise and tenon joints, solid wood dowels, no visible metal. A turned finial caps each upright. The bottom is slatted rather than solid, so water leaves instead of standing in the base.

Materials and Construction
Frame. Solid teak, sustainably sourced. Teak is used outdoors because of what is already in it: a high natural oil content that resists water absorption, insects and rot without any coating.
Finish. Supplied unfinished in natural teak. Left alone, the surface oxidizes to a soft silver gray over roughly one season. That change is cosmetic and does not affect the strength of the wood.

Care and Maintenance
Teak. No treatment is required. To keep the honey tone rather than let it silver, apply a teak sealer once a season to a dry frame. Do not use a pressure washer, which tears the soft grain out from between the harder rings. For general cleaning, warm water, mild soap and a soft brush worked along the grain.
Off season. The frame can stay outside all year.

Frequently Asked Questions
How big a plant will it take?
Nineteen inches square by 17 deep is roughly a 17 or 18 inch nursery pot's worth of root volume. That will carry a substantial clipped evergreen, a patio olive or a full season of layered annuals with room to spare.
Does it need a liner?
Not for the planter's sake. The bottom is slatted so water runs out on its own. If you are planting directly into it and want to keep soil from washing through the slats, a piece of landscape fabric across the base is all it takes.
Do I have to assemble it?
Yes. It ships flat in a 6 inch deep carton and goes together with solid wood dowels. There is no hardware to lose and no tools beyond a mallet.
Will the teak go gray?
It will, over roughly one season outdoors, unless you seal it. The silver gray is the natural oxidation of the surface layer and it does not weaken the wood. Oxford Garden's Teak Protectant or Australian Timber Oil will hold the original tone if you prefer it.
Can I leave it planted over winter?
The teak can stay out all year. Whether the plant can is a question for the plant. Soil that freezes solid expands, so if you are planting directly in the box, give the roots room and do not pack it to the rim.
Can it sit on a deck?
Yes, though lift it every so often and let the boards underneath dry. Anything that drains through will keep the deck under it damp if it never moves.
How is it delivered?
By parcel carrier. The carton is 22" L x 21" W x 6" H at 25 lb, inside parcel limits, so it arrives like any other package.
Is there a larger size?
Oxford Garden lists the English Planter in 15 inch and 19 inch. The 19 inch is 19 inches square and 17 inches high; the 15 inch is a 15 inch cube.
