Napoleon Haliburton Gas Stove, Direct Vent, Natural Gas
Napoleon Haliburton Gas Stove, Direct Vent, Natural Gas

A direct vent gas stove with a built-in blower and electronic ignition, for natural gas. The Haliburton GDS28-1NE is 22 1/2 inches wide, shows a four-piece log set through a glass door and draws its combustion air from outside, so the flame never uses the air in your room. Napoleon classes it as a decorative appliance, built for the look of the fire rather than as a source of heat.
Direct vent: the stove is sealed. Combustion air comes in through the outer pipe and exhaust leaves through the inner pipe, so you do not need a chimney. Napoleon's manual shows the allowed wall and roof runs.

Questions people ask us
What kind of stove is the Haliburton GDS28-1NE?
It is a direct vent gas stove for natural gas with electronic ignition and a built-in blower. It draws combustion air from outside and sends the exhaust back out, so you do not need a chimney. The glass door shows a four-piece log set, and Napoleon lists a satin chrome accent bar, a satin chrome door and several vent terminals for it.
What does direct vent mean for the Haliburton?
It means the stove is sealed. Combustion air comes in from outside and exhaust goes back out through a two-in-one pipe, a 4″ exhaust inside a 7″ air intake. The flame does not use your room air, and you do not need a chimney.
Plan the route before you order. Napoleon’s manual allows a horizontal run of up to 20 ft and a vertical run of up to 40 ft, with minimum rise and elbow rules that depend on the run. If you use the periscope kit to exit below grade, Napoleon limits the vent to 8 ft on a stove. Napoleon also says rigid and flexible venting must not be combined, and parts from different vent makers must not be mixed. The pipe is sold separately.
Which vent kit do I need for the Haliburton?
It depends on where the vent leaves your house. When you use Napoleon venting, the manual lists these terminations: wall terminal kit GD-175 (made for stoves, venting included); roof terminal kit GD-110 for a 1/12 to 7/12 pitch; roof terminal kit GD-111 for an 8/12 to 12/12 pitch; flat roof terminal kit GD-112. Pick one in the add-ons below and it goes into your cart with the stove. You still need pipe and elbows for your run, and Napoleon asks that you do not mix venting brands. See direct vent pipe or send us your vent path and we will check the pieces first.
Is the Haliburton a heater?
No. Napoleon’s rating plate describes it as a vented decorative gas appliance that is not a source of heat and not intended for use as a heating appliance. The 30,000 BTU/hr figure is the most gas the burner can use, not a heating rating. Plan the heating of your room separately and choose this stove for the flame. Napoleon’s manual notes that the fan increases the heat output, but the stove is still rated as decorative.
How do the ignition and controls work?
The electronic Haliburton has an on demand pilot (IPI). When you turn it on with the switch, a remote or a thermostat, the pilot lights and then the burner. When you turn it off, both shut down. Napoleon also built in a continuous pilot mode with a seven day timer. It keeps the system warm for colder starts, and it shuts the pilot off by itself if the stove sits unused for about a week.
The on/off switch is on the back of the stove at the top left. Napoleon lists the F45 and F60 handheld remotes and a wall mounted thermostat, and you can add them below.
What happens in a power outage?
Napoleon’s manual says the stove has a battery back-up. The 6 volt battery pack is supplied and it takes four AA batteries, which are not supplied. Connect the battery holder to the wire harness before you use the stove. The blower needs house power and will not run without it.
Does the Haliburton have a blower?
Yes. The Haliburton has a thermally activated blower built in. Napoleon says it starts on its own about 15 to 30 minutes after you light the stove and runs for about 30 to 45 minutes after you turn the stove off. Napoleon’s parts list shows a variable speed switch, a heat sensor and a 7 ft power cord with it. Keep drywall dust away from the blower, because Napoleon says it can ruin the bearings and is not covered by the warranty. Napoleon’s manual shows how to replace the blower, and it is linked below.
What comes with the stove?
Napoleon’s manual shows the stove with its safety barrier, a glass door, a four-piece log set (GL-620) with glowing embers and charcoal embers, a trivet, an accent bar, the blower and a 7 ft power cord. The vent pipe and terminal, any remote or thermostat and any satin chrome accent bar or door are sold separately.
What are my options for the finish?
Napoleon lists a satin chrome plated accent bar (AR28SS) and a satin chrome door kit for the Haliburton, and you can add both below. Napoleon also lists a metallic black door, a satin chrome plated ornamental trivet, black traditional andirons and ambient-glow embers. Ask us about those.
Does the Haliburton have to be fastened down?
Napoleon says it is recommended that the stove be secured in all installations, and in a mobile home it must be fastened in place. Napoleon says to ask your dealer for the securing kit that suits a freestanding stove, so ask us and we will find the right one.
Is the Haliburton safe around children and pets?
It is hot when it runs, and Napoleon says it stays hot for a long time after it is off. Napoleon supplies a safety barrier that reduces the risk of burns from the hot glass, and says it must be installed. Napoleon also asks that furniture and other objects stay at least 4 ft from the front of the stove, and recommends a physical barrier, such as a safety gate, if toddlers or other at-risk people are in the house.
How much room does the Haliburton need around it?
Napoleon sets minimum clearances to combustibles for the sides, back, top and vent, and they differ by venting layout. They are drawn in the installation manual and on the specification sheet, both linked below, so check them against your wall and ceiling before you order. If the stove sits on carpet, vinyl tile or other flooring that is not wood, Napoleon says it needs a metal or wood panel under it that runs the full width and depth. Send us your room and we will help you read them.
Where can I install the Haliburton?
Napoleon approves the Haliburton for bedroom and bed-sitting room installations and says it can go in an aftermarket, permanently located manufactured (mobile) home where local codes allow. It must be installed by licensed professionals in line with Napoleon’s installation manual and your local codes. A carbon monoxide detector is required in every room that has a gas appliance.
