Napoleon Ascent Multi-View Fireplace, Direct Vent, Natural Gas
View full details

A 3-sided peninsula direct vent natural gas fireplace with a Phazerâ„¢ log set and glowing embers. The Ascent Multi-View BHD4PN lets you see the flame from the front and from both ends. It draws its combustion air from outside and sends the exhaust back out, so the flame never uses the air in your room. Napoleon classes it as a decorative appliance, built for the look of the fire rather than as a source of heat.

Questions people ask us

What does direct vent mean for this fireplace?

It means the fireplace is sealed. Combustion air comes in from outside and exhaust goes back out through a two-in-one pipe, a 5″ exhaust inside an 8″ air intake. The flame does not use your room air, and you do not need a chimney.

Plan the route before you order. Napoleon allows up to 20 ft of horizontal vent and up to 40 ft of vertical vent, and does not allow rigid and flexible vent to be mixed. Its spec sheet calls for a minimum rise of 43″ above the appliance before any horizontal run, and 57″ if you need the full 20 ft horizontal. The pipe and termination are sold separately.

Is it a heater?

No. Napoleon’s installation manual describes the Ascent Multi-View as a decorative product that is not a source of heat, and says it is not intended to burn solid fuel. The 30,000 BTU/hr figure is the most gas the burner can use, not a heating rating. Plan the heating of your room separately and choose this fireplace for the flame.

What comes with the fireplace?

Napoleon’s manual shows a safety barrier and glass door, plus end safety barriers and doors, a set of eleven Phazer™ logs with glowing embers, and a battery back-up housing. Vent pipe, the termination, the four AA batteries and any panels, media, rocks or fire art are sold separately. Plan to add the control you want.

What is the difference between the 3-sided and see-through models?

This is the 3-sided peninsula model. You see the fire from the front and from both ends, so it suits an island or a divider that stops short of the wall. Napoleon’s specification sheet shows a main viewing area of 28 1/2″ Ă— 35 1/2″ and an end viewing area of 27 1/8″ Ă— 17″.

Logs or glass: which one is this?

This listing is the log set model. Napoleon supplies Phazerâ„¢ logs and glowing embers. The logs glow when they touch the flame, and Napoleon says their color evens out as the pigments burn in during the first uses. Napoleon also notes that blocked burner ports can cause a poor flame pattern, so follow the log placement drawings.

How do the ignition and controls work?

The Ascent Multi-View has an on demand pilot (IPI). When you turn it on with a switch, a remote or a call from a thermostat, the pilot lights and then the burner. When you turn it off, both shut down. Napoleon also built in a continuous pilot mode with a seven day timer. It keeps the system warm for colder starts, and it shuts the pilot off by itself if the fireplace sits unused for about a week. The switch, remote and thermostat are optional connections, so ask us which control fits your plan.

What happens in a power outage?

Napoleon’s manual says the appliance comes with a battery back-up. If you use it, your installer puts four AA batteries (not supplied) into the holder and connects them to the wire harness, so the fireplace can still be operated if the power fails.

Do I need an electrical connection?

Yes. Napoleon lists the appliance at 115 V, 60 Hz, less than 12 amps, and shows both a hard wired connection and a receptacle connection. Plan for a qualified electrician as well as a gas fitter.

Can I mount a TV above it?

Napoleon warns that high temperatures on the wall or in the air above the appliance can cause melting, discoloration or damage to decorations, a TV or other electronics. Planning a TV above the Multi-View? Send us your plan before you place anything above it.

Can I put a mantel above it?

Yes, but the depth of the mantel sets how high it has to sit. Napoleon’s chart in the installation manual and on the specification sheet gives the minimum height for each mantel depth. If you paint or lacquer the mantel, Napoleon says the finish must resist the temperature so it does not discolor.

What can I finish the wall with?

Napoleon says non-combustible finishing material must not project more than 4 in. from the face of the door on all four sides. If you want it to project farther, the clearance at the sides, bottom and top grows by 2 in. for every extra inch. Napoleon also says combustible finishing is allowed with 0 in. of clearance above the appliance opening.

How tall does the enclosure need to be?

Napoleon requires a minimum inside enclosure height of 50″, measured from the bottom of the appliance, and 62 1/4″ from the bottom of the appliance to the ceiling. The framing opening is 42 1/2″ to 43 1/2″ W Ă— 46 1/2″ H Ă— 22 1/8″ to 24 1/8″ D. Napoleon asks that the space inside the enclosure be left unobstructed.

What are my options for the firebox?

Napoleon lists Newport decorative brick panels and MIRRO-FLAMEâ„¢ reflective porcelain panels for the Ascent Multi-View. Pick what you want in the add-ons below and it goes into your cart with the fireplace. Ask us if you want to change the flame bed on the log set model.

Where can I install it?

Napoleon approves the Ascent Multi-View for bathroom, bedroom and bed-sitting room installations and certifies it for mobile home installation. It must be installed by licensed professionals in line with Napoleon’s installation manual and your local codes.
