Napoleon Ascent Linear Fireplace, Direct Vent, Natural Gas
Napoleon Ascent Linear Fireplace, Direct Vent, Natural Gas

A 36 inch linear flame behind sealed glass. The Ascent Linear 36 is a direct vent natural gas fireplace. It draws its combustion air from outside and sends the exhaust back out, so the flame never uses the air in your room. Napoleon classes it as a decorative appliance, built for the look of the fire rather than as a source of heat.
Two pipes in one run: exhaust goes out through the inner pipe while fresh air comes in around it.

Questions people ask us
What does direct vent mean for this fireplace?
It means the fireplace is sealed. Combustion air comes in from outside and exhaust goes back out through a two-in-one pipe, a 4″ exhaust inside a 7″ air intake. The flame does not use your room air, and you do not need a chimney.
Plan the route before you order. Napoleon allows up to 20 ft of horizontal vent or 40 ft of vertical, and the pipe and termination are sold separately. The fireplace is also certified for use with a power vent kit, which your installer can tell you about.
Is it a heater?
No. Napoleon's installation manual describes the Ascent Linear as a decorative product that is not a source of heat, and its rating plate says the same. The 17,500 BTU/hr figure is the most gas the burner can use, not a heating rating, so plan the heating of your room separately and choose this fireplace for the flame.
Can I mount a TV above it?
Napoleon publishes TV layouts in section 10.5 of the installation manual and always recommends the optional Universal Heat Management kit when a TV goes above the fireplace. The recessed layouts with a mantel are only acceptable when that kit is installed.
Napoleon says its TV layouts were tested with the smallest enclosure and the deepest recess, and are not a guarantee for every TV. Raising the TV or mantel, a mantel that sticks out farther and a larger enclosure all lower the temperature above the fireplace. Check your TV maker's temperature limits too, and send us your wall dimensions if you want a second opinion.
Can I put a mantel above it?
Yes, but the depth of the mantel sets how high it has to sit. Napoleon's chart in section 10.4 of the installation manual gives the minimum height for each mantel depth. Reduced mantel clearances are only allowed when the Universal Heat Management kit is installed, and Napoleon recommends fitting it during installation, before the gas is connected.
Is this the natural gas or the propane model?
Natural gas. The N in BL36NTE-2 marks the fuel, and the propane version is the BL36PTE-2. Napoleon says the fireplace can be converted between natural gas and propane in the field with a certified kit, and that your authorized dealer handles that. Tell us before you order if you plan to run propane.
What happens in a power outage?
Napoleon's manual describes a battery back-up. The housing and the connector are supplied, and you add 4 AA alkaline batteries. Your installer sets it up before the gas goes on, so mention it when you book the install.
Can I change how the flame bed looks?
Yes. It ships with a CRYSTALINE™ ember bed of Topaz crushed glass. Napoleon also lists Beach Fire, Shore Fire and Mineral Rock kits and MIRRO-FLAME™ reflective porcelain panels for this model. Napoleon asks you not to substitute other media, to keep glass over the burner to a single layer and to keep it clear of the pilot.
Why is my flame so active on a vertical vent?
Vertical vents can give a lively flame. Napoleon says that if you prefer a calmer, more traditional look, the vent exit can be restricted with a restrictor vent kit. The kit comes with its own instructions, and your installer can add it.
Where can I install it?
Napoleon approves the Ascent Linear for bathroom, bedroom and bed-sitting room installations and certifies it for mobile homes. It must be installed by a licensed professional, in line with Napoleon's installation manual and your local codes.
