Napoleon Altitude X Fireplace, Direct Vent, Electronic Ignition
Napoleon Altitude X Fireplace, Direct Vent, Electronic Ignition

A 36 inch direct vent natural gas fireplace with a built-in blower, night light and electronic ignition. The Altitude X 36 draws its combustion air from outside and sends the exhaust back out, so the flame never uses the air in your room. Napoleon classes it as a decorative appliance, built for the look of the fire rather than as a source of heat.
Two pipes in one run: exhaust goes out through the inner pipe while fresh air comes in around it.

Questions people ask us
What does direct vent mean for this fireplace?
It means the fireplace is sealed. Combustion air comes in from outside and exhaust goes back out through a two-in-one pipe, a 5ā³ exhaust inside an 8ā³ air intake. The flame does not use your room air, and you do not need a chimney.
Plan the route before you order. Napoleon allows up to 20 ft of horizontal vent and up to 40 ft of vertical vent, and does not allow rigid and flexible vent, or parts from different vent makers, to be mixed. If you use the periscope kit to exit below grade, Napoleon limits the vent to 10 ft on a fireplace. The appliance is also certified for use with a power vent kit. The pipe is sold separately.
Which vent terminal do I need?
It depends on where the vent leaves your house. When you use Napoleon venting, the manual lists these terminations: a wall terminal kit (GD422R-2 or the ST58U-1 Silhouette terminal); roof terminal kit GD410 for a 1/12 to 7/12 pitch; roof terminal kit GD411 for an 8/12 to 12/12 pitch; flat roof terminal kit GD412; or the GD401 periscope kit for a wall exit below grade. Pick one in the add-ons below and it goes into your cart with the fireplace. You still need pipe and elbows for your run. See direct vent pipe or send us your vent path and we will check the pieces first.
Is it a heater?
No. Napoleon's manual describes the Altitude X 36 as a decorative product that is not a source of heat, and says it is not intended to burn solid fuel. The 35,500 BTU/hr figure is the most gas the burner can use, not a heating rating. Plan the heating of your room separately and choose this fireplace for the flame.
What comes with the fireplace?
Napoleon's parts list shows a safety barrier, a glass door with top and bottom door trims, a grate and media tray, glowing embers and charcoal embers, a blower, a night light assembly, and a battery housing and Bluetooth control module. Vent pipe, the termination, a wall switch and any decorative front, trim, brick or reflective panels, log set or heat management kit are sold separately.
How do the ignition and remote work?
The Altitude X 36 has an on demand pilot (IPI). When you turn it on from the remote, a switch or a thermostat call for heat, the pilot lights and then the burner. When you turn it off, both shut down. Napoleon also built in a continuous pilot mode with a seven day timer. It keeps the system warm for colder starts, and it shuts the pilot off by itself if the fireplace sits unused for about seven days.
Napoleon's manual describes a remote with a blue LCD display that shows the room temperature in °F or °C, six flame levels, and keys for blower speed and the night light. It also describes a child lock. Ask us to confirm the remote for your order.
What happens in a power outage?
Napoleon's manual describes a battery holder that takes four AA batteries, so the appliance can still be operated if the power fails. In that case the slider switch on the battery holder has to be set to the ON position. Mention it to your installer when you book.
Do I need an electrical connection?
Yes. Napoleon's rating plate shows 115 V, 60 Hz and less than 12 amperes, and the manual shows both a hard wired connection and a receptacle wiring diagram. Napoleon says all wiring should be done by a qualified electrician in line with local codes, and that the 110 V supply must never be wired to the valve or to the wall switch. Plan for an electrician as well as a gas fitter.
How do the blower and night light work?
The Altitude X 36 has a built-in blower and a night light, both controlled from the remote. The blower has six speeds. When you select a speed, it comes on about 5 minutes after the burner starts and keeps running for about 12 minutes after the burner turns off. Napoleon's manual shows how to replace the blower and the night light bulb.
Can I control it from my phone?
Napoleon's manual describes the eFIRE Bluetooth app, which controls on/off, flame height, the light feature, the blower and a timer, and lists a Bluetooth control module in the parts list. Napoleon notes that app features depend on how the appliance is equipped, so ask us what your unit supports. The remote stays the master control and can always switch the fireplace off.
Can I mount a TV above it?
It needs planning. Napoleon's manual gives recommended minimum clearances for a TV above the fireplace and says they are supplied in good faith and are not a guarantee that the TV stays within its maker's temperature limit. The temperature at the TV has to be checked when the fireplace is installed, and a TV cannot go where it runs hotter than its maker allows. Napoleon's heat management systems can lower the temperature above the fireplace, and the manual says the appliance is suitable for its Dynamic Heat Control and Ducted Heat Management systems. Send us your wall dimensions and we will help you choose.
Can I put a mantel above it?
Yes, but the depth of the mantel sets how high it has to sit. Napoleon's chart in the mantel clearance section of the installation manual gives the minimum height for each mantel depth. Napoleon allows lower mantel heights only when its Dynamic Heat Control or Ducted Heat Management system is installed.
What can I finish the wall with?
Napoleon says non-combustible facing material must not project more than 4 in. from the face of the door on any of the four sides. If you want it to project farther, the clearance at the sides, bottom and top grows by 2 in. for every extra inch. Use non-combustible board, brick, stone or tile where the manual calls for non-combustible finishing.
What are my options for the front, panels and logs?
Napoleon lists Zen fronts in black or charcoal and finishing trims in black, charcoal, copper or gun metal for the Altitude X 36. For the firebox, it lists decorative brick panels and MIRRO-FLAME⢠reflective porcelain panels. It also shows oak, driftwood and birch log sets. Pick what you want in the add-ons below and it goes into your cart with the fireplace. Napoleon also sells heat management kits and other trims for this series, so ask us about those.
Is this the natural gas or the propane model?
This listing is the natural gas model. Napoleon says the appliance is only for the gas type on its rating plate and that it can be converted only with a certified kit, so tell us before you order if you plan to change fuels.
Where can I install it?
Napoleon approves the Altitude X 36 for bathroom, bedroom and bed-sitting room installations and certifies it for mobile home installation. It must be installed by licensed professionals in line with Napoleon's installation manual and your local codes. Napoleon asks that furniture and other objects stay at least 4 ft from the front of the appliance.
