Lexington Hearth Federal Fireplace Mantel, Wood or Non-Combustible

The Lexington Hearth Federal is a 6.5 inch deep mantel shelf with dentil molding, curves and beading in the Federal style, made for colonial-style fireplaces. Lexington Hearth builds it two ways, and we list one of each: a 48 inch wood veneer shelf in Cherry (FD-4-WD-CH) and a 72 inch non-combustible shelf cast in Burncrete and painted Raven (FD-6-LH-BK). The wood version is light and easy to hang, while the non-combustible version is certified to ASTM E136 for use closer to the heat.

Questions people ask us
What is the difference between the two versions?
They share the Federal design and 6.5 inch depth. The wood shelf is composite wood veneer, 48 inches long and 13 lbs, in Cherry. The non-combustible shelf is cast in Burncrete, 72 inches long and 50 lbs, in Raven, and is certified non-combustible to ASTM E136, so it can sit closer to a heat source.
Which one do I need?
Go by your fireplace manual. If it calls for a non-combustible mantel at the height you want, or you want the shelf low under a TV, choose the non-combustible version. If the manual allows a combustible mantel at your height, the wood shelf works and weighs far less.
How does it mount?
Both hang on a bracket screwed into the wall studs. The wood shelf uses a French cleat or slim-profile bracket with 2.5 inch screws and one 2.25 inch screw through the top, and Lexington Hearth calls for 2 studs at 48 inches. The non-combustible shelf uses a 3 by 2 inch bracket and three self-drilling screws, with 4 studs at 72 inches. On masonry, use anchors rated for four times the load.
Can I get other sizes or colors?
Lexington Hearth does not make custom sizes of the Federal because of the dentil molding. The wood version also comes in Honey Oak, Luna and unfinished, and the non-combustible version in Luna and Avocado. Ask us about those.
Can I cut or drill the non-combustible version?
No. Lexington Hearth warns against drilling, sawing, sanding or machining its cast mantels, because that can release ceramic fiber and crystalline silica dust. Use the pre-drilled holes and keep tape off the painted finish.
