Hayward Perflex D.E. Pool Filter

Hayward W3EC40AC Perflex 20 Sq. Ft. Extended-Cycle D.E. Pool Filter

The Hayward W3EC40AC Perflex D.E. Filter provides exceptionally clear pool water in a compact, easy-to-maintain design. Built for residential above-ground pools, this 20-square-foot diatomaceous earth filter uses Hayward's proven Flex-Tube filtration system to capture extremely fine dirt, debris and suspended particles that may pass through less precise filtration systems.

Unlike a traditional D.E. filter that requires routine backwashing, the Perflex design uses an integrated bump handle to flex the internal tubes, redistribute the D.E. coating and help extend the filtration cycle. This provides powerful D.E. filtration with less water waste and a simple maintenance process.

20 Sq. Ft. Filtration Area Designed for residential above-ground swimming pools
Flex-Tube Technology Captures fine particles for exceptionally clear water
No Routine Backwashing Bump-style regeneration helps extend each filtration cycle

Why Choose the Hayward W3EC40AC Perflex Filter?

The W3EC40AC combines the water clarity of D.E. filtration with a straightforward, space-saving filter design. Water enters the filter and passes through D.E.-coated Flex-Tubes, where fine contaminants are captured before clean water returns to the pool.

As debris builds up, the bump handle can be operated to flex the tubes and redistribute the D.E. powder. This process, known as regeneration, can restore flow and extend the filter cycle without immediately opening the tank or performing a conventional backwash.

What makes a Perflex filter different?
A Hayward Perflex filter uses flexible tubular filter elements instead of traditional D.E. grids. The built-in bump mechanism flexes these tubes and redistributes the D.E. coating, helping restore filtration performance between full cleanings.

How the Perflex Bump Handle Works

When the filter pressure rises and water flow begins to decrease, the circulation pump is turned off and the bump handle is operated according to Hayward's instructions. This flexes the internal tubes, loosens the accumulated D.E. and debris, and redistributes the filter media across the elements.

Regenerating the filter can help restore flow and extend the current filtration cycle. When bumping no longer produces an adequate reduction in pressure, the filter should be drained, cleaned and recharged with the correct amount of fresh D.E. media.

Important: Always shut off the pump, disconnect power and fully relieve system pressure before operating, opening, draining or servicing a pool filter. Follow the Hayward owner's manual for the proper bump, cleaning and D.E. recharge procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Hayward W3EC40AC a cartridge filter?
No. It is a D.E. filter that uses flexible tubular elements coated with diatomaceous earth filter media. It does not use a replaceable pleated cartridge.

How much D.E. does the W3EC40AC require?
The filter requires approximately 4 pounds of D.E. media when initially charged or after a complete cleaning.

Does this filter need to be backwashed?
The Perflex design does not use a conventional multiport backwash valve. The internal elements are regenerated with the bump handle, and the filter is periodically drained and cleaned when regeneration no longer restores normal pressure and flow.

What size pool can the Hayward W3EC40AC handle?
Its rated flow supports up to approximately 19,200 gallons with an 8-hour turnover or 24,000 gallons with a 10-hour turnover. Actual sizing should also account for the pump flow rate, plumbing, pool usage and local turnover requirements.

Does the W3EC40AC include a pool pump?
No. This listing is for the filter assembly only. A compatible pump, plumbing connections and D.E. filter media are required separately unless specifically stated otherwise.

Is W3EC40AC the same size as EC40AC?
The W3EC40AC is the open-line version of Hayward's EC40AC 20-square-foot Perflex filter. Always use the complete model number when confirming replacement parts.

What Is Included?

  • Hayward W3EC40AC Perflex filter assembly
  • Internal Flex-Tube element assembly
  • Bump-handle mechanism
  • Clamp-style tank closure
  • Pressure gauge and applicable factory-installed filter components
Not included: Pool pump, D.E. filter powder, hoses, plumbing adapters and installation labor unless expressly shown or stated elsewhere in the listing.

Installation and Sizing Reminder

Position the filter on a solid, level surface with enough clearance to reach the bump handle, pressure gauge, drain and tank clamp. The pump selected for the system should not exceed the filter's rated flow or pressure limits.

For the best results, confirm the pool volume, required turnover rate, pump performance and plumbing size before installation. Improperly sized pumps can reduce filtration performance or place unnecessary stress on the filter system.

Please verify your application before ordering. The W3EC40AC is a 20-square-foot Hayward Perflex D.E. filter intended primarily for residential above-ground pools. Compare the model number, flow requirements and existing plumbing before replacing an older filter.
