Why it matters

The Control Decides How It Actually Gets Used.

A heater on a plain switch gets left on or left off. Put it on a timer and it runs when people are outside. Put it on zones and one patio can be warm while another is not. This is the part of the order people skip and then regret.

3 Things To Settle Before You Order

Count The Heaters First

The control has to carry the load of everything on it. Tell us how many heaters and at what wattage and we will match the switch, timer or panel to the amp draw.

Decide On Zones

One switch for the whole patio is the cheapest answer and the least useful one. Zone controls let a dining area and a lounge area run independently.

The Wiring Is Not A Weekend Job

Infratech requires a licensed electrician for installation and service. Relay and home management panels in particular need proper commissioning.

Questions We Get Asked

If yours is not here, call us. We would rather answer it now than have you guess.

Can one control run several heaters?

Yes, within its rated load. The right answer depends on how many heaters and at what wattage, which is why the amp draw of each model matters. Send us the layout and we will match the control to it.

Do I need 120 volt or 240 volt?

240 volt for almost every patio. Infratech only recommends a 120 volt heater for an enclosed space no larger than 5 by 5 feet, so if you are heating a real seating area, 240 volt is the answer. The 120 volt units also draw far more current for the same heat: a 1,500 watt heater pulls 12.5 amps at 120 volt and 6.3 amps at 240 volt.

How high should it be mounted?

Infratech ties a height range to every model, from 6 to 7 feet on a 1,500 watt unit up to 8 to 12 feet on a 6,000 watt one. Their listing floor is 6 feet for a UL Listed heater and 8 feet for a UL and CUL Listed one, and their own suggested minimum is 7 feet. Mount higher than the range and the heat spreads too thin; mount lower and it is uncomfortable overhead.

How many heaters will I need?

It depends on the area and how exposed it is, and the planner on this page works it out from Infratech’s own coverage chart. As a shape of the answer, a 4,000 watt dual element unit is rated to cover 8 by 10 feet in average conditions, and Infratech says outright that most spaces need more than one heater.

Can it go under a covered patio?

Yes, and it works better there. Infratech states that indoor or well protected environments generally exceed the average coverage figure, while extremely cold or windy spots deliver less. Keep 12 inches to the ceiling on a wall mount and 6 inches on a ceiling mount, and angle a wall mounted unit between 30 and 60 degrees so the warmth reaches people from the side rather than straight down on their heads.

What clearances does it need?

Infratech publishes the same figures across every series: 36 inches in front of the heater, 18 inches at the sides and ends, and 6 inches behind. Allow 18 inches to an adjacent wall. These are minimums to combustible surfaces and they are worth handing to your installer before anything is mounted.

Who should install it?

A licensed electrician. Infratech says it plainly in every manual, and adds that an electrician should confirm the actual voltage at your property before anything is ordered. We can tell you the amp draw of each model so the circuit gets sized properly, but the wiring is not a job to take on yourself.

What is the difference between the W Series and the C Series?

Heat output is identical model for model, and so is coverage, mounting height and amp draw. The difference is the body and what it will accept. The W Series has short standoffs and a flatter profile for tight architectural installs. The C Series is the one that takes the decorative motif fronts, in Contemporary, Craftsman, Mediterranean and Traditional.

Do I need a control, or does it just switch on?

A heater needs something to switch it, and which control depends on how many you are running and whether you want to dim or zone them. The range runs from a simple on and off switch plate through analog and solid state controls with timers, up to relay panels and home management panels for multiple zones. Tell us the layout and we will spec the control side with the heaters.
