The Crosswind’s compact side-discharge design makes it easier to fit into many smaller equipment pads, but compact does not mean the unit can be boxed into a tight corner.

A heat pump must pull a large volume of outdoor air through the evaporator and discharge that air without recirculating it. Poor placement can reduce output, increase runtime, increase sound and create recurring operational problems.

The 59-inch discharge clearance is especially important. The Crosswind blows air horizontally, so a nearby wall or fence can force discharged air back toward the evaporator.

Recirculated cold air reduces heating capacity and may make the unit appear undersized even when the model was selected correctly.

Minimum clearance is not always the ideal service clearance. Leave enough room for panel removal, electrical service, union access and future replacement. A unit that technically fits but cannot be serviced is not installed well.

Both current side-discharge models use 1Β½-inch PVC unions. The heater should be installed in the pool return line after the filter and before any chlorinator, chemical feeder or salt cell.

The external piping must be independently supported. The inlet and outlet unions are not designed to carry the weight of unsupported plumbing.

Keep the heat pump reasonably close to the circulation equipment. Raypak states that piping between the pool and heater should be less than approximately 30 feet when practical because excessive piping length can reduce performance.
Install chemical feeders downstream. A check valve or Hartford loop should be installed after the heater and before chlorinating equipment to reduce the risk of concentrated chemical backup.
