Raypak Crosswind Installation Requirements
Use this clearance, plumbing and electrical checklist before ordering a Crosswind 50-I or 65-I side-discharge heat pump. A correct installation protects airflow, heating performance, electrical safety and long-term reliability.
The Raypak Crosswind 50-I and 65-I must be installed outdoors on a stable, level base with at least 59 inches of open space in front of the horizontal air discharge and 12 inches on the remaining listed sides. Both use 1Β½-inch PVC unions and require 208β230V, single-phase power. The 50-I requires 16A minimum circuit ampacity and a 20A breaker. The 65-I requires 20A minimum circuit ampacity and allows a maximum 25A breaker.
```The Crosswindβs compact side-discharge design makes it easier to fit into many smaller equipment pads, but compact does not mean the unit can be boxed into a tight corner.
A heat pump must pull a large volume of outdoor air through the evaporator and discharge that air without recirculating it. Poor placement can reduce output, increase runtime, increase sound and create recurring operational problems.
Where Can the Raypak Crosswind Be Installed?

The Crosswind is designed and certified for outdoor installation only.
Level Equipment Pad
Use a stable, level base that supports the unit and allows condensate to drain away.
Near Pump and Filter
Shorter water piping reduces unnecessary resistance and installation cost.
Away From Sprinklers
Direct irrigation spray can damage the cabinet and electrical components.
Protected From Roof Runoff
Normal rain is expected, but concentrated roof runoff should not fall directly onto the unit.
Clear of Landscaping
Shrubs, fences and storage items must not obstruct the evaporator or discharge path.
Raypak Crosswind Clearance Requirements
```Minimum ventilation clearances
The 59-inch discharge clearance is especially important. The Crosswind blows air horizontally, so a nearby wall or fence can force discharged air back toward the evaporator.
Recirculated cold air reduces heating capacity and may make the unit appear undersized even when the model was selected correctly.
Crosswind Plumbing Requirements
```Both current side-discharge models use 1Β½-inch PVC unions. The heater should be installed in the pool return line after the filter and before any chlorinator, chemical feeder or salt cell.

The external piping must be independently supported. The inlet and outlet unions are not designed to carry the weight of unsupported plumbing.
Crosswind Electrical Requirements
```The Crosswind requires a dedicated 208β230V, single-phase, 60 Hz electrical supply. Electrical work must follow the National Electrical Code, local requirements and the installation manual.

Make sure the pump can maintain the correct operating range for the selected model.
Plan the Bypass
Include valves that allow the heater to be isolated for service or winterization.
Protect Against Chemicals
Position salt cells and feeders downstream with approved backflow protection.
