Can the AVIA Control a Variable-Speed Pump?

Yes, but only with the pump families Raypak identifies as compatible. The AVIA manual lists direct control compatibility with the Raypak Protégé variable-speed pump and AquaStar variable-speed pumps.

When pump control is enabled, the AVIA can use configured speeds for standby, pool, spa and heating conditions. That allows the heater to request an appropriate pump speed when heat is needed.

Raypak Protégé VSP

The Protégé pump uses the appropriate RS-485 harness supplied with or specified for the compatible equipment configuration.

RS-485 is a communication standard, not universal compatibility. A Pentair, Hayward or other third-party pump cannot be assumed to communicate directly with the AVIA merely because it has RS-485 terminals. The device language, addressing and approved control method must also match.

Newer AVIA heaters can communicate directly with compatible Poolside Tech The Attendant controllers for remote operation and monitoring.

Raypak’s April 2026 manual lists minimum ignition software versions of 1.30 for AVIA 264 models and 2.30 for AVIA 404 models. The connection uses the AVIA communication port and requires Raypak RS-485 Harness Adapter Kit 100-10004059.
