Pool Heater Not Igniting? Troubleshooting Guide

Pool Heater Not Igniting?

A Professional Troubleshooting Guide for Aqua Terra Backyard Owners.

If your pool heater is not igniting, it is almost always due to a problem with gas supply, ignition components, or safety systems preventing startup. Pool heaters are built to stop ignition when something is off, so when your heater won't light, it is usually protecting itself from damage or unsafe operation.

What Causes Ignition Failure?

⚙️ Gas Supply Issues

If gas flow is interrupted, too low, or shut off, the heater cannot ignite. This is the most common external factor.

⚡ Faulty Igniter

The igniter may be worn out, dirty, or no longer producing a strong spark or heat to light the gas.

🛡️ Safety Sensors

Pressure switches and temperature sensors will block startup if they detect unsafe operating conditions.

💨 Airflow Problems

Blocked vents or poor airflow can prevent proper combustion and trigger a safety shutdown.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

1

Confirm Gas is On

Make sure the gas valve is open and supply is consistent. Even partial restriction can stop ignition. Check your propane tank level or natural gas meter.

2

Check Power & Controls

Verify breakers, switches, and control panel operation. If the display is blank, you likely have an electrical issue or a blown fuse on the control board.

3

Listen for the Sequence

Turn the heater on and listen. You should hear the fan start, followed by a clicking sound (spark) or a pause for the igniter to heat up. If you hear clicking but no flame, the gas is likely not reaching the burners.

Common Symptoms & Solutions

Symptom Likely Cause Recommended Action
Clicks but does not light Gas supply or Igniter Check gas valve & inspect igniter for cracks.
No sound or response Electrical / Control Board Check breaker & transformer output.
Ignites briefly then shuts off Flame Sensor / Airflow Clean flame sensor & check for vent blockages.
Works intermittently Loose Wiring / Sensor Inspect all sensor connections for corrosion.

Deep Dive: Critical Components

The Hot Surface Igniter

Modern heaters use a silicon carbide igniter that glows white-hot to light the gas. These are fragile and can crack due to age or vibration. If you see any visible cracks, the part must be replaced.

The Water Pressure Switch

This is a safety device that prevents the heater from firing if there isn't enough water flow. If your pool filter is dirty, the pressure might be too low to trigger this switch.

Ready for an Upgrade?

If your heater is repeatedly failing, it might be time for a more reliable, modern system from the industry's top brands.
