The Pipeline Filter is designed for easy access, but easy does not mean careless. It is still a pressurized pool filter and must be handled safely every time it is opened.

The best maintenance routine is simple: keep a clean-pressure baseline, clean before the filter becomes heavily restricted, and inspect wear parts every time the tank is opened.

When Should You Clean an AquaStar Pipeline Filter?

Clean the cartridge when pressure rises noticeably above the clean starting pressure at the same pump speed.

Reduced Flow

Weak returns, low heater flow, poor skimming or reduced water movement may point to restriction.

Cloudy Water

If chemistry is correct but water remains dull, the filter may need cleaning or the cartridge may be worn.

Storms, leaves, pollen, plaster dust or algae cleanup can load the cartridge much faster than normal use.

Changing pump speed changes pressure readings, so compare PSI at the same normal operating speed.

There is no universal normal PSI. Normal pressure depends on pump speed, plumbing, filter cleanliness, heater restriction, valve position and system design. Your clean starting pressure is the number that matters most.

How to Clean an AquaStar Pipeline Filter

Shut the pump off and disconnect power. Do not rely only on the pump display. Timers, apps and automation can restart equipment unexpectedly.
Relieve all pressure from the filter. Use the relief process required by AquaStar. Confirm pressure is fully relieved before opening.
Open the filter according to the manual. Use the safe-release and locking system correctly. Do not force the lid or collar.
Remove the cartridge carefully. Lift straight up where possible. Avoid crushing pleats or damaging the cartridge ends.
Rinse the cartridge pleats. Use a garden hose and rinse from top to bottom, working between pleats. Avoid pressure washers.
Inspect the cartridge and tank parts. Look for torn pleats, cracked end caps, broken bands, worn O-rings, damaged unions or a bad gauge.
Reinstall and reseal properly. Confirm the cartridge is seated correctly and sealing parts are clean, lubricated if required and undamaged.
Restart and record clean pressure. Bleed air according to instructions, verify there are no leaks and record PSI at the normal pump speed.
Never open a Pipeline Filter while it is pressurized. A pressurized filter can separate with serious force. Disconnect pump power, relieve pressure completely and follow AquaStar’s instructions every time.

What to Inspect Every Time the Filter Is Opened

Part What to Look For Why It Matters
Cartridge Torn pleats, broken bands, cracked end caps, collapsed media or heavy staining. Damaged media can allow debris bypass or poor filtration.
Lid O-ring Cracks, flat spots, swelling, cuts, dryness or sand stuck to the seal. The lid O-ring helps prevent leaks and pressure loss.
Pressure gauge Needle not returning to zero, fogging, cracks or obviously incorrect readings. A bad gauge makes cleaning decisions unreliable.
Relief valve Leaks, sticking, cracked plastic or damaged O-ring. The relief valve is part of safe depressurization and air bleeding.
Drain plug Damaged threads, missing O-ring or slow leaks. Drain plug leaks can look like tank or plumbing leaks.
Union gaskets Flattened, pinched or cracked seals at plumbing unions. Bad gaskets can cause suction or pressure-side leaks.

Understanding Pipeline Filter Pressure

Filter pressure is not a universal number. A clean PLF27000 on one pad may not show the same PSI as a clean PLF35000 on another pad.

Pressure depends on pump speed, pipe size, plumbing length, valves, heaters, sanitizers, returns, water features and filter cleanliness.

High Pressure

Often points to a dirty cartridge, closed valve, restricted return, dirty heater bypass or plumbing restriction.

Low Pressure

Can point to low pump speed, clogged baskets, air leaks, low water level or suction-side restriction.

Gauge Stuck at Zero

If the system is running and the gauge reads zero, the gauge may be bad or isolated from pressure.

Never exceed the filter’s maximum working pressure. AquaStar lists the Pipeline Filter maximum working pressure at 50 PSI. A system operating near or above that limit needs immediate correction.

How to Make the Cartridge Last Longer

  • Keep pool chemistry balanced so scale and oils do not load the cartridge prematurely.
  • Empty pump and skimmer baskets before they restrict flow.
  • Use a robotic cleaner or manual vacuuming to remove heavy debris before it reaches the filter.
  • Clean after algae cleanup instead of forcing the cartridge to hold dead algae for weeks.
  • Do not use a pressure washer on the cartridge media.
  • Do not scrub pleats with a stiff brush that can damage the media.
  • Keep the O-ring clean and properly maintained.
  • Replace worn or damaged parts instead of trying to force another season out of them.
