Questions people ask us
Is the NZ8000 a zero clearance fireplace?
Yes. Napoleon tested the High Country 8000 to the CAN/ULC S610 and UL 127 factory built fireplace standards and says it met the criteria for zero clearance installation to combustible surfaces. Napoleon lists 0 in. to the stand-offs at the rear and sides, 2 in. around the chimney, and 96 in. from the base of the appliance to the ceiling or enclosure. It must be installed by a qualified installer in line with Napoleon's manual and your local codes.
Is it EPA qualified?
Yes. Napoleon says the NZ8000 is qualified under the EPA Low Mass Wood-burning Fireplace Voluntary Program, Phase 2 emissions level, with emissions tested to ASTM E2515 and ASTM E2558. Napoleon describes the unit as a decorative product that is not intended as a primary source of heat.
What chimney does the NZ8000 need?
The flue collar is 12 in., and Napoleon allows a 10 in. or 12 in. factory built chimney listed to ULC S610 or UL 127, or to ULC S604, ULC S629, UL 103 or UL 103HT. Napoleon asks for a minimum chimney height of 15 ft and a maximum of 34 ft from the top of the appliance, with offsets of no more than 30 degrees in the U.S. or 45 degrees in Canada, and keeps 2 in. of air space around every part of the chimney. The first offset has to start at least 12 in. above the top of the appliance, and the chimney must be supported at least every 20 ft. Masonry chimneys are not permitted, and the chimney cannot vent another appliance. Check the numbers against the rating plate on your unit and your chimney maker's instructions. The chimney is sold separately, so send us your chimney route and we will help you choose it.
Do I need an air cooled chimney housing?
Only if you choose an air cooled chimney. Napoleon says that when you install a 10 in. or 12 in. air cooled chimney, an NZAC10KT housing must be installed. Napoleon also notes that air cooled chimneys are not recommended in colder climates. You can add the housing in the add-ons below.
Do I need outside combustion air?
Napoleon recommends it, because it helps keep smoke out of the living space in homes with negative pressure, and your local authority may make it mandatory. The NZ8000 takes outside air directly through an opening on the left side. The inlet duct and hood must sit lower than the firebox, with a 4 1/2 in. hole through an outside wall and the hood about 12 in. above grade so snow cannot block it. Napoleon recommends a dip or loop in the duct to trap cold air. The outside air control is a lever behind the glass door guide rail, and you open it before you light the fire.
What kind of hearth is required?
A noncombustible hearth extension at least 70 in. wide and 20 in. deep, made of brick, stone or ceramic tile on at least 1 in. of cement board with 1/4 in. of tile. It must reach 20 in. in front of the faceplate and at least 12 in. past each side of the opening. If the hearth is raised at least 6 1/2 in., Napoleon allows the depth to drop to 18 in. The fireplace can sit directly on the floor with its ember strip, but a hearth extension is still required.
What wood should I burn?
Napoleon says the fireplace burns natural wood only. Hardwood and softwood both work, and hardwood is denser and burns a little slower and longer. Burn dry, clean, seasoned wood, because freshly cut wood holds about 50% moisture and seasoned wood about 20%. The longest log Napoleon allows is 32 in. and the largest fuel load is 60 lb. Napoleon asks you to burn the wood directly on the firebricks, and never to raise the fire on an elevated grate. Do not burn trash, treated wood, coal, charcoal, painted wood or cardboard.
How much space will it heat?
Napoleon gives an approximate heating capacity of up to 1,000 square feet, calls the NZ8000 a decorative product not intended as a primary source of heat, and does not guarantee that it will heat your entire home. Layout, insulation and chimney draft all change the result.
Can I put a mantel or TV above it?
Napoleon allows a combustible mantel at least 12 in. above the top of the faceplate, and its chart in the installation manual sets the depth you can use at each height. Napoleon says not to build shelves or cupboards into the area above the appliance, and the area above gets hot. Plan a TV with care and send us your wall plan.
What can I finish the front with?
Use only noncombustible material, such as cement board, on the face of the appliance, with metal studs where noncombustible facing is required. Napoleon says combustible finishing may start 8 ft above the base of the unit. Screws through the front panels must not go in more than 1/2 in. Napoleon also recommends ventilation grilles of at least 40 square inches at the floor and ceiling of the enclosure.
What are the brick panel options?
Napoleon lists three decorative brick panel sets for the High Country 8000: herringbone (NZ8HBK), smooth (NZ8SBK) and traditional (NZ8TBK). Pick one in the add-ons below and it goes into your cart with the fireplace.
How heavy is it, and how is it delivered?
The shipping weight is 1,150 lb, and Napoleon says the appliance fully dressed weighs about 1,400 lb. Make sure the floor can carry the fireplace, chimney and facing, and secure the unit through its four floor tabs. It ships by freight.
Can I use a gas log set in it?
No. Napoleon says the fireplace has not been tested with an unvented gas log set and warns against installing one. It is a wood burning fireplace, and Napoleon certifies it to burn firewood only.
How often does the chimney need cleaning?
Napoleon says to inspect and clean the chimney and the appliance at least once a year, and to inspect the chimney connector and chimney about every two months in the heating season for creosote. Burning wet wood or slow, smoldering fires builds creosote faster. Napoleon notes that chimney fires are not covered by the warranty.
