Questions people ask us

Is the NZ5000-T a zero clearance fireplace?

Yes. Napoleon tested the High Country 5000 to the CAN/ULC S610 and UL 127 factory built fireplace standards and says it met the criteria for zero clearance installation to combustible surfaces. Napoleon lists 0 in. to the rear stand-offs, 6 in. from the sides of the appliance in a framed enclosure, 2 in. around the chimney, and 84 in. from the base of the appliance to the enclosure ceiling. It must be installed by a qualified installer in line with Napoleon's manual and your local codes.

Is it EPA qualified?

Yes. Napoleon says the NZ5000 is an EPA low mass wood burning fireplace that meets the Voluntary Program Phase 2 emissions qualified level. Napoleon describes the unit as a decorative product that is not intended as a primary source of heat.

What chimney does the NZ5000-T need?

The flue collar is 10 in. and Napoleon lists a minimum chimney diameter of 8 in. The chimney must be a factory built system certified to ULC S604 and ULC S629 in Canada, or UL 103 or UL 103HT in the U.S. Napoleon asks for a minimum height of 15 ft and a maximum of 34 ft from the top of the appliance, with no more than 4 elbows and offsets of no more than 30 degrees in the U.S. or 45 degrees in Canada. It keeps 2 in. of air space around every part of the chimney. The first offset has to start at least 12 in. above the top of the appliance, and the chimney must be supported at least every 20 ft. The chimney cannot vent another appliance. The chimney is sold separately, so send us your chimney route and we will help you choose it.

Do I need an anchor plate?

Napoleon says an anchor base plate and gasket suited to your chimney system are required to start the chimney. Napoleon says that when an insulated chimney has an anchor plate smaller than 12 in. by 12 in., an AP8 kit must also be installed. You can add the AP8 in the add-ons below.

Can I use an air cooled chimney?

Napoleon tested the NZ5000 with the DuraVent DuraChimney II air cooled chimney. It needs an NZAC8KT air housing and a DuraVent 8DCA-AP starter collar, and it needs its own outside air supply with a liner of at least 4 in., separate from the fireplace air. Napoleon notes that air cooled chimneys are not recommended in colder climates. The NZAC8KT is not one of our online add-ons, so ask us if you want it.

Do I need outside combustion air?

Napoleon recommends it, because it helps keep smoke out of the living space in homes with negative pressure, and your local authority may make it mandatory. The NZ5000 takes outside air directly through an opening on the left side. The inlet duct and hood must sit lower than the firebox, with a 4 1/2 in. hole through an outside wall and the hood about 12 in. above grade so snow cannot block it. Napoleon recommends a dip or loop in the duct to trap cold air, and offers the 111KT outside air kit. The control is a lever on the bottom left, below the screen door, and you open it before you light the fire.

What kind of hearth is required?

A noncombustible hearth extension made of brick, stone or ceramic tile on at least 1 in. of cement board with 1/4 in. of tile. It must reach 20 in. in front of the fireplace when the hearth is not raised, and at least 12 in. past each side of the faceplate. The fireplace can sit directly on the floor with its ember strip, but a hearth extension is still required.

What wood should I burn?

Napoleon says the fireplace burns natural wood only. Air dried, seasoned hardwood gives lower emissions than softwood or freshly cut wood, and wet wood builds creosote. The longest log is 24 in. depending on the loading method and the size of the log, and the largest fuel load is 30 lb. Napoleon asks you to burn the wood directly on the firebricks, and never to raise the fire on an elevated grate. Do not burn trash, treated wood, coal, charcoal, painted wood or cardboard.

How much space will it heat?

Napoleon gives an approximate heating capacity of up to 1,000 square feet, calls the NZ5000 a decorative product not intended as a primary source of heat, and does not guarantee that it will heat your entire home. Layout, insulation and chimney draft all change the result.

Can I use a gas log set in it?

Yes, with conditions. Napoleon tested the NZ5000 with manufactured gas log sets of up to 40,000 BTU. With a vented set, the flue damper must be fixed open. Only unvented sets certified to ANSI Z21.11.2 may be installed, never with the chimney removed, and the doors must be fully open while it runs. The firebricks and insulation must be in place first. Napoleon built in knockouts for the gas pipe, and says an unvented set cannot be installed if the mantel follows the cord wood clearances. A qualified installer should do the gas work.

Can I put a mantel or TV above it?

Napoleon allows a combustible mantel at least 12 in. above the top of the faceplate, and its chart in the installation manual sets the depth you can use at each height. Napoleon says not to build shelves or cupboards into the area above the appliance, and the area above gets hot. Plan a TV with care and send us your wall plan.

What can I finish the front with?

Use only noncombustible material, such as cement board, on the face of the appliance, with metal studs where noncombustible facing is required. Napoleon says combustible finishing may start 73 5/8 in. above the base of the unit. Screws through the front panels must not go in more than 1/2 in. Napoleon also asks for ventilation grilles of at least 40 square inches at the floor and ceiling of the enclosure.

What are the brick panel options?

Napoleon lists two decorative brick panel sets for the High Country 5000: traditional (NZ5TBK) and smooth (NZ5SBK). Pick one in the add-ons below and it goes into your cart with the fireplace.

How heavy is it, and how is it delivered?

Napoleon lists a shipping weight of 552 lb without the firebricks, which add another 225 lb, and about 745 lb fully dressed with the firebricks. Make sure the floor can carry the fireplace, chimney and facing, and secure the unit with its pallet securing tabs. It ships by freight, and we confirm how the firebricks ship with your order.

How often does the chimney need cleaning?

Napoleon says to clean the chimney a minimum of twice a year and as required, and to inspect the chimney and connector about twice a month while you burn, because burning wet wood or slow, smoldering fires builds creosote faster. Napoleon asks you not to run the appliance hot enough for any part to glow red.

Napoleon President’s Lifetime Limited Warranty

Napoleon's President's Lifetime Limited Warranty covers the combustion chamber, ceramic glass for thermal breakage only, porcelainized enameled components, aluminum extrusion trims, ash drawer and iron castings for as long as you own the appliance, on the terms below. Models with a guillotine door and screen system carry 5 years on that system. Wearable parts such as firebrick, switches, wiring and gasketing get free replacement parts in the first year. During the first 10 years Napoleon repairs or replaces covered parts free of charge, and from year 10 to life it supplies replacement parts at 50% of the current retail price. After the first year, Napoleon may choose to refund the wholesale price of a defective part, and installation and labor are not covered. The warranty does not cover venting components, over-firing, misuse or lack of maintenance, or damage from water, weather, dampness or condensation. Registering is not required to make a claim, but keep your proof of purchase, model and serial number. Ask us and we will send you the full terms.
